Startup rocks mobile payments wristband at music festival

When you attend a multiday music festival, there's plenty to keep up with. Food, toiletries, sleeping gear, clothes and a few things we probably shouldn't discuss.

Who wants to fuss over a wallet?

A South African startup feels your pain and wants to help.

The company, Gust Pay, rolled out a mobile app for the recent Rocking the Daisies music festival, Oct. 3-6 in Capetown, that included an NFC-enabled wristband payment system.

The mobile app was built in collaboration with Red Bull Mobile and Seed Experiences, and using smartphone navigation features, it helped festival-goers find their way around the venue and so on (the "Find My Tent" and "Find My Car" features proved especially popular, Gust said on its blog). The company said it avoided the 3G crush by using fixed outdoor wireless.

The wristband allowed users to pre-load money; the company said about 500 wristbands were used, with about 10 transactions each.

The first year was meant to get people talking, especially media, VIPs and festival staff, Gust Pay co-founder Joe Botha said on the blog, adding that alternative payments may turn out to be cheaper than cash at events, as cash can add 15 percent when fees, security and logistics are figured in.

"Using cash at events is risky, and it's a frustrating experience for customers to run out of money at these big events," Botha said on the blog. "Nobody wants to return from a three-day festival having to deal with the admin of having a phone, wallet or credit card lost or stolen."

The company said the app was one of the top downloads in the South African iTunes store in the weeks leading up to the festival.
