Staples investigating possible data breach
Has POS malware become an 'easy button' for payment card data theft and counterfeiting?
POS malware seems to be turning into the "easy button" for financial fraud. This week, reports are circulating that office supply seller Staples might be the latest addition to the rapidly lengthening string of retailers struck by card data theft within the past year.
According to a report by Krebs on Security, Staples has acknowledged that it is investigating a possible breach. Krebs said that, so far the breaches seem confined to northeastern U.S. stores, including seven Staples locations in Pennsylvania, three in New York City and one in New Jersey.
Staples has contacted law enforcement about the possible intrusion into its customer data systems and told Krebs that the company is "working to resolve the situation."
