No more gift cards through Square. According to Reuters, the mobile-POS-turned-mobile-wallet provider is ditching its gift card program.

Launched last year, Square's gift card effort allowed users of Square Wallet to send prepaid virtual gift cards for Square-accepting merchants to a friend via email. It gave Square's merchants the ability to offer gift cards, and also acted as a recruiting tool since recipients needed to use the Square Wallet to "store" the gift cards.

But now gift cards are gone. A spokesman for Square told Reuters: "Square gift cards were a fun way to send gifts from local businesses to anyone over the holiday season," but added they are no longer available to purchase.
