Spanish department store chain opts for contactless payments

El Corte Inglés, Europe's largest department store chain, has installed more than 5,200 contactless POS terminals in its Spanish stores, representing 25 percent of its total POS terminal base. Madrid-based El Corte Inglés said customers will be able to pay with contactless cards or NFC-enabled mobile phones at these contactless terminals.

By the end of 2014, El Corte Inglés hopes to have converted more than 60 percent of its POS terminals to contactless technology, the retailer said in a press release. El Corte Inglés has been granted Visa Europe certification for its contactless technology deployment.

In November, the number of Visa contactless card transactions in Spain rose by 397 percent year-on-year to 2.1 million. The value of these transactions was Euro 67.2 million ($91.8 million), up 369 percent on November 2012.

As at January, Spain had an installed base of 347,000 contactless card readers and 5 million contactless Visa cards.
