South African Nedbank offers EMV mobile POS

While payleven is launching a chip-and-PIN reader in Europe, South African Nedbank is launching one in that country. The Nedbank PocketPOS is the first live EMV certified mobile POS solution in South Africa, Nedbank said.

The solution uses a card reader and PIN pad that connects to a smartphone using Bluetooth technologies.

"[PocketPOS] creates the opportunity for many smaller businesses to accept card payments where this would not have been considered feasible up to now. It gives businesses on the move, such as plumbers, electricians or delivery services, the ability to reduce cash acceptance when making sales and processing payments on the road. Effectively, we believe PocketPOS will change the way they do business," said Sydney Gericke, Managing Executive of Nedbank Card and Payments.

PocketPOS will be used by a test group of existing Nedbank clients to start with a large scale roll out during the second quarter of 2013.
