Samsung Pay transactions top $30 million in South Korea

Consumers have made more than 1.5 million total transactions to date, with approximately 60 percent of the transactions taking place on the Galaxy Note5 device.

Samsung announced this week that it saw Samsung Pay users in South Korea conduct more than $30 million in accumulated transaction volume through Sept. 20, one month after the mobile wallet launched in the country, according to a press release.

Consumers have made more than 1.5 million total transactions to date, with approximately 60 percent of the transactions taking place on the Galaxy Note5 device. Samsung said 36 percent of its customers using eligible devices activated Samsung Pay within the first month and that 10 percent use it daily.

Samsung Pay debuts in the U.S. on Sept. 28.

"Although the details on Samsung Pay usage are constantly being updated, the response we've received so far has been beyond our expectations,” said Injong Rhee, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics and global head of Samsung Pay. "We knew Samsung Pay would be a game-changer in the mobile payments industry and now with the user data, we are seeing the greater impact it is having on consumer behavior and on the lifestyle of our customers."

Samsung reiterated in the announcement that it plans to bring Samsung Pay to the U.K., Spain and China soon.
