Samsung jumps on mobile wallet bandwagon

Even though digital wallets existed before the Apple Passbook, Samsung will likely be accused of copying Apple with its latest development: a new mobile wallet application that allows users to store virtual event tickets, coupons, membership cards and boarding passes on their Samsung devices.

The new Samsung Wallet, which admittedly bears a striking resemblance to the Passbook mobile wallet application, was announced this week during Samsung's Developer Day at Mobile World Congress.

Developers will be able to provide users of supported applications the option to load tickets and boarding passes into the Samsung Wallet, making it easier for them to keep track of documents in one place.

Additionally, time and location-based push notifications will update content in the wallet in real-time, so a traveler with a stored boarding pass can be alerted to changes in flight status, and shoppers with stored loyalty cards can receive discount offers when they're near a location associated with the card.

According to the Samsung developer website, the API for the new wallet will be made available for development by select partners on March 7, and will be offered to the public in May.

The Samsung Wallet will be downloadable to Galaxy SIII, Galaxy Note I and Galaxy Note II devices as well as any mobile devices that run the Android OS in version 4.0 or later, Samsung said on its developer site.

What's interesting about the Samsung Wallet is that all three Samsung devices that will support it have NFC capabilities. Though the Samsung Wallet is not configured for NFC payments at this time, it's yet to be seen how developers will integrate the technology into their applications.
