Rogers Communications files with Canadian government to form FI

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Rogers Communications Inc., the largest Canadian wireless provider, has filed with the Canadian government to create its own financial institution.

According to the report, the new bank would focus on credit, payment and charge-card services.

"The license, if granted, would give us the flexibility to pursue a niche credit card opportunity to our customers should this make sense at a future date," said Carly Suppa, a Rogers spokeswoman, in the article.

Just last month, reports said Rogers is looking to introduce NFC mobile payments to Canada in the near future, perhaps as soon as Q1 2012.

In the earlier report, sources said Rogers is looking to join with financial institutions and card brands in the effort, but by starting its own financial institution Rogers could presumably dispense with a bank partner in its plans.
