ROAM plays politics...kind of

The Boston Globe has a great article up on the use of mobile point of sale technology by the campaign for Barry Hinckley, a candidate for U.S. Senate in Rhode Island. According to the article, Hinckley's campaign is using mobile POS equipment from ROAM Data.

ROAM CEO Will Graylin told Globe writer Scott Kirsner his company was connected to the Hinckley campaign by one of ROAM's salespeople who knew a Hincklley staffer. Now the campaign is using its readers wherever they go.

"They carry around the ROAMpay solution on a smartphone and tablet to pretty much every speaking engagement," Graylin says in the article. "They've raised tens of thousands of dollars using this method."

ROAM is best known in the mobile payment space as the manufacturer behind the readers used by companies like Sage Payment Systems and First Data (a fact noted in the Globe article), but ROAMpay is ROAM's own mobile POS business. (ROAM recently announced a partnership with US Cellular.)

According to the article, ROAM, which is based in Boston, has raised $10 million in funding and has 60 employees.
