Report: Vodafone, Gemalto to sign mobile payment deal
Several sources are reporting U.K.-based telecommunications giant Vodafone is set to sign a five-year deal with security provider Gemalto. The deal calls for Gemalto to provide necessary technology to help Vodafone launch a mobile payment service.
The deal is supposed to be announced next week.
Among its offerings, Gemalto provides digital security technology, trusted service management and over-the-top provisioning services for mobile payment providers.
Vodafone has partnered with Visa in the past to bring a mobile payment scheme to its subscribers. The company is also behind the M-Pesa mobile money platform in several developing markets in Africa. Vodafone just announced it will be expanding that service to allow wider access to remittance services in those African countries.
