Put a ring on it: Visa offering contactless option to Rio Olympians
Visa has introduced a contactless ring that Team Visa athletes can use at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to make purchases at venues with contactless payment terminals, according to a press release.
Visa said the wearable ring is the first to be linked to a Visa account. The card network will give the ring to 45 athletes.
"Visa’s first payment ring puts smart payment technology right on the hands of our athletes for convenient and easy payments," said Jim McCarthy, executive vice president of innovation and strategic partnerships at Visa Inc. "This ring is the latest example of how Visa is continuously innovating to deliver on its goal of universal acceptance at the games and across the world."
The Olympics is the latest sporting event Visa is using to showcase emerging payments technology. It did the same with Super Bowl 50 this past February. Before the big game, Mobile Payments Today spoke to Visa about that effort.
