Proposed regulations may end MPesa dominance in Kenya
New draft regulations published by the Central Bank of Kenya include recommendations that E-money issuers use open systems that allow interoperability with other payment systems in Kenya and globally.
According to The Star, the proposals, if enacted, could end the dominance of SAFARICOM'S M-PESA mobile money service.
Kenya's three other mobile network operators favor the changes, the site said, while SAFARICOM has fought new rules by claiming they would kill innovation and slow down systems.
The public can comment on the proposed changes until Oct. 18. If they are effected, MPesa agents will be allowed to offer money services from other MNOs without restriction.
M-PESA declined to comment on the proposal.
