One million Indians download MobiKwik Android wallet app

Indian prepaid mobile wallet provider MobiKwik reports a million downloads of its Android app from the Google Play Store. This represents a tenfold growth from Nov. 27, 2012, the company said, at which point just 100,000 apps had been downloaded. MobiKwik is based in Gurgaon, near New Delhi.

Funds can be added to MobiKwik's wallet using major debit and credit cards from 53 Indian banks, and used for mobile recharge, bill payment and the purchase of products and services.

MobiKwik wallet users can buy products and services via different channels, including apps, SMS and mobile websites. The company's bill pay service can be used for prepaid and post-paid mobile phone accounts, television subscriptions, data cards, broadband Internet, landline phones, electricity, gas and insurance.

In November 2013, MobiKwik released a MobiKwik app for Windows, built in collaboration with Microsoft. The company also offers iOS and Blackberry versions of its app.

Across the various mobile device platforms, 2 million MobiKwik wallet apps have been downloaded, accounting for 2 million transactions per month, the company said.

"We aim to develop our app into a complete wallet solution," Bipin Preet Singh, MobiKwik's CEO and founder, said in a statement.
