NYC to test mobile payments on parking meters

According to the New York Post, New York City drivers can soon look forward to feeding the meter by phone. The city is going to test "pay-by-phone" parking meters. The new meters will warn motorists when time is running out and then prompt drivers via their mobile devices to purchase additional time without requiring them to return to the meter.

The Post reports around 300 spots will see the new meters during a one-year pilot program. To use the new meters, drivers can register online and then use an app or text message to enter the meter number and the amount of time they want to purchase.

NYC Deputy Transportation Commissioner Bruce Schaller told the Post that the goal of the program is driver convenience, but New York transportation officials are also hoping technology will result in some savings to the city, the Post says.
