NYC-area commuter rail testing mobile payments and ticketing
New York City-area commuter rail lines are looking at ways to offer mobile payment and ticketing options to passengers.
According to Bank Technology News, the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, the two rail lines serving the New York area, will run trials letting customers buy and display tickets with their smartphones, which could then be scanned by ticket handlers.
LIRR spokesman Joe Calderone told BTN that the pilot is very limited, but that LIRR has been eager to test mobile ticketing.
The post said Metro-North has enlisted Masabi US Ltd. to test a smartphone design; LIRR is working with CooCoo. A limited pilot program for the LIRR program will run during the Barclays PGA Tour event at Farmingdale later this week.
