Nokia to introduce NFC capabilities with new 'Angry Birds' game
Finnish mobile-phone maker Nokia Oyj is partnering with Rovio Mobile Oy, the maker of the hit game "Angry Birds," to create a new version of the game to leverage the near field communications (NFC) capabilities of its new phones.
Players of the new version, called "Angry Birds Magic," will have access to five game levels at start, but must find other players using NFC-equipped smartphones to unlock additional levels.
"We're going to use the power of our brand to maybe bring NFC to a wider user base so people realize what the technology is," Matthew Wilson, a marketing manager at Rovio told Bloomberg. "It's not going to be highly profitable at first but it's something we'd like to be involved in."
According to the Bloomberg story, Nokia is working on upgrading its Symbian mobile operating system to enable the NFC capabilities in its C7 model smartphone. The C7 model is currently sold in the United States as the Nokia Astound.
