NFC mobile payments hit Tanzania

Another developing market is adopting mobile payments. This time it's the East African nation of Tanzania.

According to an article on Finextra, Zantel, a unit of UAE-based Etisalat, announced it is introducing a payment system based on near field communications (NFC) technologies in Tanzania. The system will be built on Zantel's zPesa mobile money service that is currently used in Tanzania for person-to-person payments.

According to the Finextra story, Zantel is betting the low cost of implementation, and its ease-of-use, will help NFC payments catch on.

"Th? secret fοr th? success οf th?? service ?? th? simplicity οf th? process," Essa Al Haddad, chief marketing officer of Etisalat, said in the article. "Th? consumer ?υ?t needs tο bring [the] device close tο th? commercial's point οf sale terminal ?n? validate th? transaction w?th a password."

Finextra reports that Etisalat plans on rolling out an NFC payment system in 18 countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, including Tanzania.
