New Honeywell mPOS tools for iOS take checkout to the shopper

Honeywell today announced two new iOS-based tools designed to help retailers shorten checkout times and make shopping more personalized for customers and store owners.

The Captuvo SL42 and SL22 are encasements for the Apple iPhone 5 and fifth-generation iPod Touch mobile digital devices, respectively. According to a company announcement, the products turn those consumer devices into selling tools that allow retail workers to look up inventory, scan bar codes and securely process payments, bringing the checkout to the shopper and eliminating the need to stand in a checkout line.

Both new products feature Honeywell Adaptus 6.0 imaging technology, according to the release, which the company said can accurately read almost any bar code, including coupons or loyalty club bar codes that are increasingly found on the reflective screens of mobile devices.

In a news release, Honeywell alluded to a recent study on shopping behaviors (SYNQERA May 2013), which said three out of four shoppers say standing in line is what they find most objectionable about shopping.

"Mobile POS enablers like our Captuvo line are quickly changing the way customers and stores do business, and you will continue to see innovation from Honeywell in this area," Peter Fehl, vice president of global marketing for Honeywell Scanning & Mobility, said in the release. "What sets apart Honeywell devices is our technology, with the industry's best scanning capability, security features and durability."

The first-generation Captuvo SL22 has been in use at Sportsman's Warehouse, a one-stop shop for outdoor enthusiasts, which has 46 big box stores in the U.S.

"The Honeywell Captuvo SL22 is a great fit for our low-key shopping environment; it extends our workers' product and inventory expertise, and is much easier for customers and our workers to use than a traditional aisle-based checkout lane," Mike Van Orden, chief technology officer for Sportsman's Warehouse, said in the release. "And because it's based on the Apple iOS, our employees already are familiar with the user interface, so there is very little training needed, even for temporary or seasonal help."

The Captuvo SL22 is now shipping, and the SL42 will ship this month.

The first generation Captuvo SL22 sled for iPod Touch 4 was released in July 2012.
