Myanmar to get mobile payment services

Myanmar will be getting a prepaid mobile payment service courtesy of a new joint venture led by Emida Technologies, a California prepaid services company. Emida announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with three companies to bring a mobile payments scheme to the Southeast Asian country.

Emida will be joined by Myanmar IT and communications company Blue Ocean Operating Management, investment company Myanmar Technologies Investment Corp., and Oceanic Communications Ltd, a New Zealand-based company that provides distribution services in the Pacific region.

Emida said it already operates in 37 countries around the world and is looking to grow through the expansion of its mobile financial services channel.

"Emida is excited to be entering Myanmar with such prestigious partners," said Emida CEO Dennis Andrews in a statement. "We have worked with OCL for some time and this experience combined with that of local market leaders BOOM and MTI makes for a compelling partnership to address the exciting opportunities that lie ahead."
