Mozido trials proximity P2P payments

Mozido, an Austin, Texas-based mobile payments and marketing software vendor, has launched a pilot of a mobile person-to-person proximity payment service.

Mozido says its P2P service will allow people within proximity of each other to exchange funds using their mobile phones instead of using cash. Potential use cases for the service include payments to valet parkers and food delivery drivers, as well as people splitting a dinner bill, among many others, the company said in a news release.

"Almost everyone has a mobile phone that is always with them, but not everyone has the right amount of cash when they need it," Mozido COO Mike Love said in a statement. "Our proximity payment service makes giving money to someone nearby using mobile phones easier than using cash."

Love added that the P2P proximity payment service is an extension of Mozido's mobile banking services which allow users to make domestic and international payments via mobile phones.

Using Bluetooth Low-Energy technology, Mozido's P2P proximity payment service will identify mobile users nearby who also use the service.

In early December Mozido announced that it had received the first $30 million of a committed $70 million round of financing led by a Boston-based investment adviser with assets under management of more than $500 billion. Mozido said the funding will enable it to accelerate growth both organically and through strategic acquisitions.

The latest investment announcement brings Mozido's total funding to more than $100 million with participation from Brentwood Investments, TomorrowVentures, Atlanticus Corp. and Bob Turner of Turner Investments.

Mobile services offered by Mozido include international remittances, bill payments and mobile top-up for unbanked and under-banked individuals, as well as loyalty programs, shopping, payment in retail stores and tailored marketing offers.
