Morpho supplying NFC SIM cards to Portuguese consortium
SIM chip maker Morpho, part of Safran, announced it will be supplying NFC cards to the Portuguese MobiPag project. MobiPag is the combined effort of several companies in Portugal, including the country's three major wireless carriers, aimed at creating a nationwide mobile payment solution.
Morpho said it will be the first, and at this point only, supplier of NFC cards to MobiPag.
"NFC mobile payment offers many advantages; greater convenience and easier management of transactions are just two examples," said Yves Portalier, SVP telecoms at Morpho. "We are proud that Morpho supports the MobiPag project both in a consultancy role and as the sole card supplier with our NFC Evolution SIM card."
Portalier said MobiPag is a great example of collaboration between the main entities of payment, telecommunications and technology companies.
The Center of Excellence for Dematerialization of Transactions, the private non-profit association that oversees the MobiPag project, has run several pilot programs to date but has not announced when a full-scale rollout will occur.
