Montreal tests transit mobile payments

Suretap, a mobile wallet provider, is a partner in the pilot.

Montreal's public transit network has begun testing Android-based NFC mobile payments on some of its buses and trains thanks to a partnership with Suretap, a wallet provider owned by the major wireless network operators in Canada.

The Société de transport de Montréal told the CBC that the agency will test the new system with a few hundred employees, but there is no timeline when mobile payments will be available to the general public.

"We want to make it simple for customers to get access to our installations and to our network and this is another way," STM chairman Philippe Schnobb told the CBC.
