Monitise adds bill pay, cardless cash withdrawals to BlackBerry Money

Indonesian mobile financial tech company Monitise has added bill payments and cardless cash withdrawals to BlackBerry Money, its BlackBerry Messenger peer-to-peer payments service. BlackBerry Money launched earlier this year through a joint venture with BlackBerry, Astra Graphia Information Technology and Indonesian financial institution PT Bank Permata Tbk.

The bill payment feature will let BBM users pay a range of bills, including utilities, credit cards, post-paid mobile, Internet and cable TV, Monitise said in a news release. The company said topping up electricity prepaid accounts will be key for users as state distributor PLN rolls out the model across its customer base. According to the release, more than 5 million Indonesian households are on prepaid terms.

The app can be downloaded from BB App World via mobile device.

The solution includes an extension of PermataBank's cardless cash withdrawal service through the bank's 800-plus ATMs, which provides another option for withdrawing funds from BBM. Previously, customers could transfer money to any bank account.

The app also can be accessed through Wi-Fi, according to the release, which makes BBM less dependent on mobile network data speeds and creates access for BB subscribers who do not have a data plan.

"The rollout of the new features will enable even greater convenience for Indonesian consumers and reflects our desire to meet their needs in an increasingly mobile world," Bianto Surodjo, head, liabilities, wealth management and e-channel at PermataBank, said in the release. "Bill payments, in particular, will prove useful in light of the ongoing rise in the number of pre-paid utility accounts among Indonesian residents."
