MoneyGram, Gemalto to partner on international mobile money, transfer services

International money transfer service MoneyGram is partnering with digital security provider Gemalto to make its services more mobile.

The companies announced today that MoneyGram's money transfer platform will be integrated with Gemalto's mobile payment platform solution, LinqUs, which gives mobile phone users access to financial services, bank accounts and person-to-person transfers.

The companies' collaboration will give customers the ability to send international money transfers directly from their mobile devices to any of MoneyGram's 284,000 locations around the world. Customers will also be able to receive funds from those locations into their mobile wallets.

The new partnership will also mean that any of Gemalto's Mobile Financial Services clients, such as banks and mobile network operators, can begin offering mobile remittance services using MoneyGram's global network.

"MoneyGram is actively developing new mobile and online channels to meet our customers' evolving needs to access cash quickly, easily and globally," said Tim Summers, MoneyGram head of global strategic partnerships, in the announcement. "Gemalto has relationships with more than 450 mobile operators and 3,000 financial institutions worldwide. Their extensive experience with global mobile financial services brings a secure environment that extends MoneyGram's money transfer services to consumers and gives them more options."

According to Jean-Claude Deturche, Gemalto's SVP for Mobile Financial Services, cross-border remittance has a compelling value for both senders and recipients worldwide in terms of convenience, reliability and safety. By leveraging consumers' trust in MoneyGram, Gemalto is giving its institutional customers the ability to offer end users convenience and flexibility to get money where it's needed quickly and securely around the world, Deturche said.
