Mobistar extends direct carrier billing to Google Play

Belgian Android device users can now buy apps, games, music and e-books from the Google Play store and pay through their monthly Mobistar bill or via prepaid credit card, the company announced. Mobistar said it is the only Belgian mobile provider that allows customers to pay for applications or games through a mobile invoice.

The use of Android smartphones is growing, Mobistar said in a news release, citing a recent IDC research bureau study that said 69 percent of smartphones sold in Western Europe during the first quarter of the year use Android, up from 55 percent in Q1 2012.

Further, according to the release, Google activates 1.5 million new Android devices daily, and the Google Play store now includes nearly 1 million applications and games. The Google Play Music store offers millions of songs for download, while Google Play Books includes a sizable catalogue of e-books.

Previously Belgian Android smartphone users who wanted to buy apps, games, music or e-books on Google Play were compelled to enter a credit card number, the release said, but only one in three Belgian consumers reported owning such a card.
