Mobile marketing by retailers to hit $55 billion

It's a good time to be supplying retailers with mobile marketing solutions. According to U.K.-based analysts at Juniper Research, spending by retailers on mobile marketing will reach $55 billion by 2015, up from $28 billion this year.

In a new report, called "Retail mCommerce: Mobile & Tablet Marketing, Advertising & Coupon Strategies 2013–2017," Juniper said it found that the market for tablets had created brand new opportunities for companies looking to reach consumers. The result is strong growth in spending for ads on both mobile and tablet devices.

In addition, the report found that mobiles are actually driving increased traffic to retailers due to mobile couponing. That's a trend that will only increase as retailers develop additional distribution methods that rely on mobile devices, the report said.

That's not to say that mobile retailing, and the increased spending associated with it, will be an easy world for merchants to navigate. Dr. Windsor Holden, the report's author, said many retailers have yet to optimize their existing online efforts for mobile devices.

"If retailers truly want to maximize the mobile monetization opportunity, then optimization is critical," Holden said in a statement. "If you are using mobile advertising for consumer acquisition, you need to push users to a site with which they can comfortably interact; retailers that fail to respond to consumer demand will fall behind."
