Mobile device shoppers made Cyber Week a lucrative retail week

Mobile devices accounted for more than 50 percent of shopping traffic on Black Friday and 40 percent of Cyber Monday traffic.

Retailers advancing an omnichannel strategy are seeing it pay off this holiday season as one industry report reveals that mobile devices accounted for more than 50 percent of shopping traffic on Black Friday and 40 percent of Cyber Monday traffic.

But the most positive news was an 80-percent increase in gross merchandise value (GMV) on Cyber Monday, according to the annual Shopatron annual Cyber Week analysis report.

The "analysis clearly demonstrates the importance of an omnichannel retail strategy for satisfying today’s demanding consumer," notes an announcement on the findings. "Now, more than ever, retailers must evolve to meet changing consumer expectations by uniting online and offline strategies to provide a convenient, reliable and efficient experience regardless of how and where customers choose to shop."

The Shopatron results also included the following highlights:

  • 45 percent GMV aggregate retail sales growth for the eight days of Cyber Week.

  • 22 percent GMV retail sales growth YoY on Black Friday was fueled by a 40-percent growth in average order value.

  • 80 percent GMV growth YoY for Shopatron retail stores on Cyber Monday.

Online shoppers are also enamored with in-store pick-up capability with almost 20 percent of order volume during Cyber Week picked up in-store.

"Being able to reserve the product online, so it is waiting for them at the customer service counter saves consumers time, puts them in control to pick up on their schedule and allows them to avoid the in-aisle shopping frenzy," notes the announcement.
