Mobile a 'game changer' according to eBay CEO

Calling mobile a "game changer," eBay Inc. president and CEO John Donahoe reported the company's revenue for the third quarter increased 15 percent to $3.4 billion compared to the same period last year. Net income was $597 million, up 22 percent over last year.

"We had a great third quarter across our company, with Marketplaces and PayPal accelerating customer growth," Donahoe said. "Mobile continues to be a game changer for us, and we continue to be a clear leader in mobile commerce and payments. With our strong portfolio and global reach, we are consistently demonstrating our capabilities to help consumers shop anytime, anywhere. And we are enabling retailers of all sizes to compete in a rapidly evolving, multichannel commerce environment."

PayPal, eBay's payment division, posted strong results for Q3 as well. Revenue increased 23 percent year-over-year, and its total payment volume grew 20 percent to $35.2 billion. Active accounts increased 14 percent to more than 117 million.

According to eBay, the PayPal effort to take its payment solutions offline to brick-and-mortar retailers continues, and the company highlighted PayPal's recent partnership with payment brand Discover and the 7 million retail locations that deal opened up.
