Mobey Forum seeks to help FIs understand mobile options

A white paper by the forum analyzes the impact of the secure element and the role of third parties, as well as current acceptance status and business models.

Mobey Forum, a trade association focused on mobile payments, has released "NFC Mobile Payments: An Industry Snapshot." The white paper aims to provide a one-stop guide to help financial institutions compare current mobile options, according to a press release.

"There is now no question over whether it is time for banks to establish their position in the game," said Zaf Kazmi, cochair of the Mobey Forum's HCE working group and head of mobile payments and commerce at CaixaBank. "The fight is on for the attention and loyalty of their customers, and some of the most powerful and wealthy organizations in the world are now in the ring. The big challenge facing banks is how to formulate a go-to-market strategy given the range of deployment options now available, each with their own intricacies, benefits and limitations. Our paper aims to contrast these different options in a bid to bring some clarity to this process."

The white paper analyzes the impact of the secure element and the role of third parties, as well as current mobile payment acceptance status, devices supported, and business models available. These are discussed as they relate to a variety of deployment options, including SIM-based, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, HCE and Google Wallet.

According to the release, the document is not an exhaustive account of the entire ecosystem, but acts as a reference point to aid comparison between major solutions and models available at this time.
