Mississippi taxpayers can experience the 'convenience' of mobile tax payment

It was inevitable that the convenience of paying on a mobile device would be appropriated by the taxman. The Mississippi Department of Revenue has announced they will be outfitting agents with what amounts to a mobile point of sale solution that will make it easier for them to collect tax bills.

An explanation of the new mobile tax-collecting app is provided in the press release:

When a revenue agent visits a taxpayer with a delinquent tax liability, the agent provides credentials identifying themselves as agents of the Department of Revenue. After the agent responds to required questions concerning the debt, the application allows the taxpayer to securely pay their tax, on the spot, through the State’s official payment solution.

The Mississippi Department of Revenue said corporate and finance tax, gaming tax and individual income tax are "just a few of the many tax types" that can be collected using the new mobile payment app.

"The Department of Revenue is always looking for new ways to make the tax paying process as convenient as possible for citizens," said Ed Morgan, commissioner of revenue, in the announcement. "With the rapid increase in use of mobile technology, the Department saw an opportunity to use a mobile device for citizens to quickly pay their taxes. The mobile tax solution does just that by allowing agents to take tax payments anywhere in the state with a data connection in just a few minutes."

The app is only being piloted at the moment, but Mississippi taxpayers can expect to experience this convenient form of payment soon.
