McDonald's to launch global payments deal with Adyen starting in UK

Adyen, an international payments platform based in Amsterdam, announced a deal to roll out a global payments system for McDonald's, the iconic home of the Big Mac, which will launch in the U.K. starting in the first quarter of 2020.

"With Adyen's scalable platform, McDonalds will be able to continue to provide customers with a seamless experience through a variety of payment methods that align with the unique needs of our markets," Leandro Balbinot, senior vice president of global technology and digital at McDonalds, said in a press release. "We look forward to rolling out this platform in several markets internationally, beginning with the U.K. in early 2020."

Adyen said its single payments platform makes it easier to scale and allows for food and beverage brands to have a consistent customer experience everywhere they operate. The platform not only makes it easier to add additional restaurants and markets to the platform, but offers support for preferred payment methods and a single view of data and customer insights.

McDonald's previously accepted mobile payments, but the Adyen deal will bring additional capabilities, including loyalty, easy onboarding for franchises, and the simplicity of being on a single platform and having a consolidated view of customer data, an Adyen spokesperson told Mobile Payments Today.

"We will be processing their mobile app payments to enable order ahead and deliveries," she said via email. "Our goal is to make sure we make a seamless experience for the customer and franchisee. It’s all about catering to evolving shopper behaviors."
