MasterCard shows developers some love with Simplify Commerce

Developers are finally getting some well-deserved attention in payments, with a number of payment gateways — from venerable old PayPal to young upstarts like Braintree and Square — doing their darnedest to make payments simple and easy for app developers. The payment providers offer developers a number of tools such as software development kits, code libraries and APIs intended to make integrating payments into an application a snap.

Now payment brand MasterCard is showing developers some love with a new product called Simplify Commerce, a suite of tools that lets developers accept e-commerce and mobile commerce payments across multiple payments types with a minimum of code required.

"By offering straightforward integration tools to developers and streamlining the process for businesses to get a merchant account, Simplify Commerce makes it easy for merchants to deliver online and mobile payments experiences to their customers," said Garry Lyons, MasterCard's chief innovation officer.

Intended to help small merchants with limited resources and the developers who serve them, the Simplify Commerce product includes APIs and SDKs for many popular programming languages including Ruby, PHP, Python and Java, MasterCard said. For mobile commerce, mobile SDKs for iOS and Android are also available. Developers can even access sample source code and support through the Simplify Commerce site.

"As a technology company with a strong history of payments experience, MasterCard is always looking for ways to empower merchants to grow their businesses," Lyons said. "We recognize the value that electronic payments bring to merchants, both large and small."

Simplify Commerce is a product that launched from MasterCard's internal Incubation unit within its MasterCard Labs research and development group, the company said.
