Luxury retailer Coach dropping cash wraps in favor of mPOS systems
Coach plans to add mobile POS systems and remove fixed cash wraps as it remodels stores, according to Retail Info Systems. The company has seen good results from mPOS deployments, the site reported after speaking with Coach CEO Lew Frankfort on an analysts call, and will rely solely on the handheld checkout systems going forward to increase floor selling space.
According to RIS, the luxury goods company's in-store foot traffic remains weak, but its North American online business is growing, with double-digit Web traffic increases driven by users browsing and shopping on smartphones and tablets. Half of site visits now come from mobile, and Frankfort said Coach's conversion rates are up.
The company, known primarily for its signature handbags and other leather goods, has begun experimenting with its boutique product assortment, RIS said, with more than 175 locations now offering footwear. The mPOS deployment will also help free up space to sell more shoes, CFO Jane Nielsen said on the call.
