Justice department seizes terrorist cryptocurrency accounts

The Justice Department announced it has seized the largest amount of cryptocurrency funded by terrorists.

The cybercurrency was funded by the following terrorist groups: Qassim Brigades; Hamas's military wing; al-Qaeda, and Islamic State of Iraq; and the Levant (ISIS).

The terrorists groups relied on soliciting cybercurrency through social media, as well as soliciting donations from around the world to obtain the funds.

"Terrorist networks have adapted to technology, conducting complex financial transactions in the digital world, including through cryptocurrencies. IRS-CI special agents in the DC cybercrimes unit work diligently to unravel these financial networks," Steven T. Mnuchin, Secretary of the Treasury said in the release. "Today's actions demonstrate our ongoing commitment to holding malign actors accountable for their crimes."

Once warrants were served, U.S. authorities seized millions of dollars from over 300 cryptocurrency accounts, four websites and four Facebook pages, all of which related to the terrorist groups

"It should not surprise anyone that our enemies use modern technology, social media platforms and cryptocurrency to facilitate their evil and violent agendas," William P. Barr, Attorney General said in the release. "The Department of Justice will employ all available resources to protect the lives and safety of the American public from terrorist groups. We will prosecute their money laundering, terrorist financing and violent illegal activities wherever we find them. And, as announced today, we will seize the funds and the instrumentalities that provide a lifeline for their operations whenever possible."

All funds that have a connection to terrorism are given in part, or in whole to the U.S. Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund once the case is closed.
