Japan's top banks unite on new mobile payments system
Three of Japan's largest banks are coming together to push a new mobile payment system that will depend on QR codes, according to a report from the Nikkei Asian Review.
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Mizuho Financial Group and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group are involved in the scheme that will see the banks unify their QR-code specifications for a roll out that is expected to happen in 2019.
The banks said they will invite other financial institutions to participate in the system. The group is expected to make a more formal announcement about the scheme later this month.
