Indian metro system to adopt mobile payments
Chennai Metro Rail Limited, the mass transit system being built in the Indian city of Chennai, plans to offer NFC-enabled mobile payments as a means to enter the system. The hope is that employing mobile payments will reduce lines and speed passenger entry.
The Hindu reported this week that the CMRL, which is scheduled to be completed in 2015, will likely have counters administered by the State Bank of India along the 45 km rail line where riders will be able to top-up their accounts on their phones like topping-up a prepaid mobile account.
The NFC-enabled entry system for mobile devices will exist in conjunction with a regular ticketing system, the report said.
Chennai, located in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is that country's fourth largest metropolitan area with more than 8 million residents.
