India mobile money network Movida to go live next month

Indian mobile payment platform Movida will be launching next month, according to the Economic Times of India. Its first partner will be HDFC Bank, India's second largest private lender.

Movida is a joint venture between Visa and mobile money company Monitise. Announced earlier this year, Movida is intended to provide the Indian market with mobile money services including bill payment, ticket purchasing and airtime top-up.

According to the Economic Times article, the project is in the integration and testing phase at the moment. Other banking partners are also lining up to join Movida's network.

Movida will be entering a market that already has one large-scale mobile money product, the Interbank Mobile Payment Service. IMPS is a product of the National Payments Corporation of India, the oversight organization for payments in that country, and currently has 50 Indian banks as partners. It recently expanded its services beyond person-to-person payments and can now be used by merchants to accept payments.
