Harris Teeter grocery chain will pilot Paydiant mobile wallet

Paydiant, provider of a cloud-based mobile wallet, cardless ATM access and offer redemption platform, today announced that the mid-Atlantic grocery chain Harris Teeter Inc. will deploy a pilot of Paydiant's white label mobile wallet.

The mobile wallet will tested in Matthews, N.C., beginning this month, according to a news release. Harris-Teeter operates more than 200 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia. The pilot store is located in Matthews Festival Shopping Center at 1811 Matthews Township Pkwy.

The initial deployment will allow Harris Teeter Express Lane customers to use the Harris Teeter mobile wallet, HT Express Pay, to pay for groceries ordered online. Payment will occur from within a customer's vehicle at Express Lane curbside pick-up locations.

Once the Harris Teeter mobile wallet app is downloaded to the customer's iPhone or Android smartphone and payment cards are linked to the wallet, the customer will scan a QR code presented to them on a Verifone handheld mobile point of sale device.

From there, the customer uses the mobile wallet to choose which major credit card to use to complete the transaction, then taps the "pay" button. A digital receipt is automatically sent to the customer's mobile device.

Later this year, in what Paydiant said is an industry first for a large retailer, Harris Teeter will also accept other Paydiant-powered mobile wallets from banks and card-issuers in the HT Express Lane. Providing wallet acceptance reciprocity is core to Paydiant's white label strategy, the company said, and delivers distribution, co-marketing and consumer benefits to both retailers and banks that have issued wallets on the Paydiant platform.

Upon the successful pilot and in subsequent phases of the deployment, Paydiant said, the mobile wallet platform will be incorporated into Harris Teeter's existing consumer-facing mobile application, ht mobile.

"Harris Teeter is an innovative, service-oriented retailer that clearly strives to build and maintain loyalty among its customers in everything it does," Chris Gardner, co-founder of Paydiant, said in the release. "Paydiant's white-label mobile wallet platform is as much about enhancing loyalty as it is about enabling mobile payments. That is where much of the value lies, and Harris Teeter is taking full advantage of those capabilities."
