Google makes bigger play in India with Tez mobile wallet

Google today officially launched in India an iOS and Android app called Tez, which is a mobile wallet consumers can use by linking their bank accounts to pay for goods and services in brick-and-mortar stores and online as well as to make person-to-person transfers.

Tez uses a technology called Audio QR, which uses sound to pair one device with another one nearby. The technology uses a smartphone's microphone and speaker.

The mobile wallet also uses India's Unified Payments Interface and works will all major banks, including Google's partners such as Axis, HDFC Bank, ICICI and the State Bank of India.

A Google spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that it is not charging consumers and small merchant a transaction fee to make and receive payments.

Google soon will give users the ability to upload cards to Tez, according to TechCrunch.
