Google ends onilne checkout commissions, adds PayPal, Shopify for pilot
Google announced that it will allow sellers to offer their products through the Buy on Google checkout experience without paying a commission, according to a blogpost by Bill Ready, president of commerce at the company.
Google will also give retailers additional choices by opening up the platform to third party providers, starting with PayPal and Shopify.
The company is launching a pilot program that will allow a limited number of sellers on the platform before opening it up to a wider audience.
Ready said the company was told by retailers that they wanted more flexibility to sell on the platform in terms of how payments are processed as well as inventory and order management, according to the post. Merchants will be able to use Shopify for inventory and order management and can choose from PayPal and Shopify for payment processing.
The changes will be rolled out initially in the U.S. and then in international markets by 2021.
