GoBank opens its virtual doors to everyone

GoBank is breaking out of beta. Beginning today, anyone can sign up for the mobile, virtual banking service from Green Dot Corp. A GoBank account is FDIC insured and is designed from the ground up to be opened and used on a mobile device, Green Dot said.

"Creating GoBank, the world's first bank account designed to be used entirely from a mobile device, has been a labor of passion for everyone involved in the project," said Steve Streit, founder and CEO of Green Dot Corp.

GoBank is trying to reinvent the traditional checking account in a couple of ways, Streit said. First, GoBank brings traditional bank accounts into the era of the app. And GoBank offers consumers a wide array of features and services with fair, simple and transparent pricing, he said.

"We're very proud of the product and are hopeful that consumers will be attracted to GoBank's high tech/low price proposition," Streit said.

Services available to GoBank consumers mirror those available at traditional banks, like bill payments, a companion debit card for offline purchases and ATM withdrawals, and direct deposit into their account. It also offers peer-to-peer payments using only an email or mobile number as well as a "mobile checkbook" that lets users make a payment using a physical check that is drafted and mailed by GoBank.

To sign up for GoBank, consumers can download the app or visit the GoBank site and set up their accounts directly on their mobile devices.
