Global virtual roundtable to discuss mobile payments in developing world

A global "virtual roundtable" is bringing payment executives together to discuss mobile payments in the developing world. Participants will gather at Cisco Telepresence locations worldwide or via Web conference on Wednesday, August 10, from 10–12 a.m. EST for a conference that is billed as the "first ever cross-pollination and idea exchange between developed and developing market payment innovators."

The event, called "Mobile Payments – Innovation via Collaboration," is being organized through One Million Acts of Payments Innovation, an industry group started in January 2011 to address payment industry developments and technologies. The event is sponsored by Access Group, PaymentsMarket and Cisco.

"In North America we obsess over getting the perfect mobile solution, stalling for many years, while developing markets have leapfrogged us in mobile payments," said event organizer Deborah Baxley in an email. Baxley is a principal at Capgemini and also a founder of One Million Acts of Payments Innovation.

"Using Cisco's amazing technology, we get to talk virtually face-to-face," Baxley said about the roundtable. "When was the last time an SVP from a bank in the U.S. got to speak directly to the GM of payments in Kenya?"

"We are certain to be surprised by hearing some things that don't normally hit the press, opportunities that have achieved scale, innovative features that might differentiate a nimble bank," Baxley said.

Those wishing to participate can register here. There is no cost to take part.
