G&D supporting mobile wallet from Telefónica Germany

Giesecke & Devrient has announced another key partnership, this time with Telefónica Germany. The digital security company said it is providing NFC SIM cards and trusted service manager services for new O2 Wallet from Telefónica Germany.

This announcement comes a day after G&D said it is providing back-end services for a mobile payment project recently launched in Brazil by carrier Vivo and payment provider PayPal.

The O2 Wallet, launched in February, is the first mobile wallet from a German network operator. It lets O2 customers use NFC-enabled smartphones to make contactless payments. Future applications for the wallet will include coupons and loyalty programs.

As a TSM provider, G&D will manage the provisioning of data to the secure element on the NFC SIM card as well as real-time management of the credentials on the SE.

Telefónica Germany is a part of Telefónica S.A. The parent company signed an agreement with G&D in 2011 to begin establishing a Europe-wide platform for NFC services.
