Gas pump-makers on board with Isis

The sign at the gas pump may warn you not to use your cellphone lest it spark a hellish conflagration, but Isis, the mobile payment joint venture between Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile USA and AT&T Mobility, will be encouraging that behavior soon — at least as far as using your cellphone to pay for your purchase.

Isis announced that it has lined up two U.S. manufacturers of retail fuel dispensers, Wayne and Gilbarco Veeder-Root, to provide integration for Isis' SmartTap mobile commerce application. The app will allow customers at gas stations to tap an Isis-enabled smartphone on the pump to pay, present a loyalty card, and redeem offers.

"The gas pump is one of the most frequented point-of-sale environments, and a critically important addition to the mobile commerce marketplace," said Isis CTO Scott Mulloy. "Isis is pleased to announce relationships with market leaders Wayne and Gilbarco Veeder-Root. It creates an important opportunity for convenience stores to enhance the customer experience, thereby increasing loyalty and in-store traffic."

Isis, which will launch in a pilot program within the next few months in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, said gas pumps from Gilbarco Veeder-Root and Wayne will be installed at select retail locations in those two test cities.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root will equip new fuel dispensers to accept Isis for payment and retrofit fuel dispensers already deployed at convenience stores across the country. Wayne will integrate the Isis SmartTap application into contactless/NFC readers on its Wayne iX Pay Secure Payment line of products.

Isis has already announced agreements with major POS device-makers and handset manufacturers, major card brands, and several card-issuing banks. It appears there's only one announcement left at this point: the date when Isis will actually launch.
