FujiFilm testing NFC-enabled photo kiosks in UK stores

FujiFilm has integrated NFC technology into its SmartPix kiosks and is testing them in about 15 retail locations in the United Kingdom. SMARTRAC N.V., a developer, manufacturer and supplier of RFID transponders and inlays, is the company behind the NFC technology. Its BullsEye NFC inlays have been powering the "Tap 'n' Print" service on the kiosks that makes it easy for consumers to transfer images from their NFC phones by selecting the pictures they want to print and touching their phones to the kiosk, according to a company press release. The phone sends the photos via Bluetooth connection.

SmartPix kiosks act as a link between the consumer, FujiFilm's Web server and a variety of output options. In addition to standard photo prints, consumers may print montages, photo books and other photo-based gift items using the kiosk.

SMARTRAC BullsEye NFC inlays enable convenient and instant Bluetooth pairing with any electronic device using Bluetooth transfer protocol. In SmartPix kiosks' case, the pairing takes less than a second.

The company expects to upgrade 9,000 more kiosks outside Europe with NFC modules by the end of this year.
