From the Isis ashes, Softcard is born

Mobile wallet rebrands itself two months after it announced its intent to distance itself from terrorist organization.

Two months ago, Isis said it would rebrand its mobile wallet to disassociate itself from any kind of perceived link with the extremist militant terrorist group that uses the acronym ISIS. The joint venture between AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless Wednesday announced a new name to a service that will remain largely the same, at least on the surface.

Softcard will replace the Isis brand in the coming months, CEO Michael Abbott wrote in a company blog post.

"Together with a simple and flexible visual system, the inherent simplicity of Softcard gives it the potential to become a category-defining name," Abbott wrote in the post. "That's a bold aspiration, but one that matches the breadth of our vision."

Current Isis Wallet users will be able to download the rebranded product in the next few weeks, Abbott said.

He did not give any indication in the blog post that the service would be much different than from what the company is currently offering.

Industry experts suggested to Mobile Payments Today in July that the rebrand represented an opportunity to revamp the service, which has stalled in gaining widespread adoption from consumers and merchants.
