Fortumo snags new funding, new carrier partners

Carrier biller Fortumo has received a hefty investment from Intel Capital and Greycroft Partners. The amount of funding wasn't announced, but TechCrunch reported it's around $10 million.

"We have been impressed with Fortumo's strong product focus and ability to execute," said Dana Settle, a partner with Greycroft, in a statement. "What sets Fortumo apart from their competition is their focus on geographies where mobile payments will have the biggest impact and growth over the next few years."

Like other carrier billers — companies like Bango, Boku, Zong and mopay — Fortumo gives developers a way to collect payment by leveraging connections to carriers' payment platforms. That means consumers can pay for digital goods by placing the purchase on their monthly phone bill.

Unlike its competitors, however, Estonia-based Fortumo is pursuing merchants outside of the U.S. and Western Europe as well as small and medium-sized merchants. The company provides those merchants with simple tools like self-service setup to begin accepting payments quickly.

Along with the fundraising news, Fortumo also announced it has signed contracts with Vodafone Group and China Mobile opening up their billing platforms to Fortumo's developers. With the Vodafone deal alone Fortumo expands its footprint into 13 additional countries.
