Filipino lawmaker wants consumer protections for prepaid minutes

The bill would forbid wireless operators from adding expiration dates to prepaid cards.

A lawmaker in Manila proposed a bill last week that would forbid telecoms from imposing an expiration date on prepiad call and text cards, according to a report in the Manila Standard Today

Las Piñas City Rep. Mark Villar said the proposed bill is meant to protect consumer again unfair sales tactics. Villar added that consumers told him they do not receive the card's full value due to expiration dates. 

Villar noted a 2013 report from the National Telecommunications Commission that found of the 100 million cellular phones in the country, some 80 million Filipinos are using prepaid cards.
