European payments industry group seeks additional extension on PSD2-SCA

The European Association of Payment Service Providers for Merchants, which represents industry members in 16 countries, is urging regulators to provide a longer extension to the PSD2-SCA deadline amid concerns that many sectors will face significant disruption without additional time.

The group sent an open letter to regulators on Wednesday asking regulators to push for an 18-month transition period for most of the industry, plus a 36-month exemption for certain sectors like the travel industry.

"From an operational point of view, 12 months will be too short and will lead to an unnecessary systemic, significant operational risk for the European cards payments market in ecommerce," EPSM chairman Nicolas Adolph wrote in his open letter.

Regulators had previously announced a 12-month extension from the Sept. 14 deadline for Strong Customer Authentication, which put additional authentication requirements on merchant transactions in Europe. The regulation deadline meant if customer identity could not be confirmed by two out of three methods, the transaction would be automatically denied.
