Etsy gets crafty with branded mPOS

The new device is meant to help Etsy users create a better presence for themselves at places such as craft fairs.

In a surprise move, crafts marketplace Etsy today announced its own branded mobile point-of-sale reader. The new device is meant to help Etsy users create a better presence for themselves at places such as craft fairs. The reader, however, lacks EMV support.

"That’s why we're launching in-person payments today to provide better tools for sellers who sell at craft fairs, flea markets, and elsewhere," Etsy wrote in a blog post on its website. "We want to help Etsy sellers be more efficient in what they're already doing in multiple sales channels."

Etsy's new endeavor comes off the recent launch of Etsy Wholesale, which gives the site's sellers more opportunities to expand offline.

The company said the card reader is free and can be used with an iOS or Android device. Etsy's transaction fee is 2.75 percent, which is the same as Square's. The company said it is evaluating "in-person payment possibiliites for sellers outside the U.S." That, of course, would need to involve EMV support.
